Why Volunteer?
Volunteering is way to give back to the community but equally important, it is a way to gain personal enrichment, beef up your resume, and show maturity.
Many times, folks are so eager to join the workforce after having not worked for a while, and they forget what it is like to be employed. Volunteering is a wonderful tool to help reacquaint oneself in the workforce. Responsibilities are similar, you are expected to be at your job by a certain time, you must adhere to some type of dress code, you must be able to do the work or make positive strides in learning how to accomplish each task given to you, and finally, you have to get along with everyone. These key elements roll over into the workforce.
Often employers are looking for a healthy work history and accountable activity in an applicant's past. Employers like to see that you were doing something positive whether it is previous paid employment or volunteer work. Working, whether paid or not, shows emotional maturity and growth...and that's want an employer wants.
So if you are in between jobs, find some community service activities to get involved with. Ask around, you may be surprised to find that many unsuspected businesses will gratefully accept you volunteer services. And who knows, that may turn into a job for you one day!
